Project Overview
Located in the historic center of Moscow, this apartment has a unique history. Originally a Soviet-era communal apartment, it was completely reconfigured into a comfortable family residence featuring private bedrooms for the parents and children, as well as a spacious open-plan living and dining area.
The Challenge
As the apartment was intended for long-term rental, it was important to create an interior with broad appeal that would meet the expectations of families seeking high-quality housing in this prestigious central district. The result is a balanced and enduring design that feels both sophisticated and welcoming.
Design Approach
The interior was designed in a neoclassical style, chosen for its ability to bridge the building's historical context with the needs of contemporary living. Combining timeless classical proportions and detailing with modern functionality, the design creates an elegant yet practical environment suited to today's lifestyle.
Key Design Decisions
One of the apartment’s most distinctive historical features—the original service staircase—has been preserved. Dating back to pre-revolutionary Russia, it was once used by household staff and service personnel. More than a century later, this separate circulation route continues to serve its original purpose, providing discreet access for staff to the isolated kitchen while preserving the historical character of the property.
